On 30 October 2023 (15:00 CET), the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) and its partners are hosting the webinar Worldwide Voices: Perspectives in tackling lead.

The 35th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (MOP 35) is scheduled to convene from 23-27 October. The ICCM was originally scheduled to take place in October 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fifth Session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5) was rescheduled to take place from 5-9 July 2021. In February 2021, it was postponed indefinitely. In August 2022, countries were advised to get prepared for the third quarter of 2023. The conference will now convene from 25-29 September 2023 at the World Conference Center in Bonn, Germany.

In the lead-up to ICCM5, capacity building and reporting emerge as central themes. The dialogue on capacity-building emphasizes the enhancement of stakeholder participation, fortifying ties across sectors, and establishing mutual goals. A shared sentiment is the importance of strategies that cater to specific needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Following approval of the SAICM Programme of Work for the period 2021-2023, the SAICM Secretariat initiated a process to explore options to develop a capacity-building strategy that will support the implementation of the new framework instrument for the sound management of chemicals. As a result, participants at ICCM5 will have before them two information documents (SAICM/ICCM.5/INF/3 and SAICM/ICCM.5/INF/5) which aim to inform discussion on the issue of capacity-building at ICCM5, and support the development of such a strategy following adoption

These chemicals can present potential health risks, persist in our environment and complicate recycling processes, leading to an urgent need for comprehensive understanding.

The chemicals industry plays a critical role in driving economic growth and innovation around the world. However, the production and use of chemicals can also have significant environmental and health impacts, particularly if not managed responsibly. As such, it is essential that companies producing and using chemicals, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), are equipped with the knowledge and support necessary to manage chemicals and waste in a sustainable and responsible manner.

The second meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment (Plastic Pollution INC-2), will take place in May 2023 in Paris, France.
