In September 2023, the Global Framework on Chemicals was adopted in the ICCM5, including a strong emphasis on gender equality. This milestone included a resolution for “Mainstreaming a Gender Perspective and Promoting Gender Equality and Empowerment of All Women and Girls in Chemicals and Waste Management.” This discussion built up on the momentum created after the ICCM5 in relation to gender by focusing on sharing case studies and practical experiences in integrating gender considerations into chemicals and waste management.

The countless chemicals that give plastics their versatility and durability also pose obstacles when it comes to recycling, health and environmental safety. These chemicals can present potential health risks, persist in our environment and complicate recycling processes, leading to an urgent need for comprehensive understanding.

The Secretariat of the Strategic Approach to Chemicals Management (SAICM) and the University of Cape Town (UCT) have established a Community of Practice (CoP) on Highly Hazardous Pesticides to bring representatives from different sectors together and to create a learning network around issues related to addressing Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs).
